Bears Defend Title
Big Winner Easter Seals

The Bears and Bulls faced off for the 42nd year in the holiday classic Turkey Bowl. Although the Bears won, defending their title, the real winner is the Cambria/Somerset Easter Seals.

To date, the annual event, founded by the Clayts (Dovey), has rasied more than $450,000 for the charity.

God bless everyone who participates in the game and supports the event each year.

JOHNSTOWN, CAMBRIA COUNTY --- The Cowboys and Lions may dominate the national stage, but Thanksgiving football in Johnstown belongs to the Bulls and the Bears.

Laurie Dovey's father and brother started the annual “Turkey Bowl” 41 years ago.

"They talked about having a turkey bowl, a holiday tournament where they would play, have fun, and then be able to raise money for those who are less fortunate.  It was a simple idea, nobody really thought it would work, and here we are decades later," Dovey said.

That simple idea has evolved over the years, but the basic premise remains the same.  The weekend warriors are some of the biggest champions for the Easter Seals of Cambria and Somerset Counties.

"They pay a certain dollar amount, and we raise money through donations, and other people who come and enjoy the game throughout the year."

Although the holiday bowl is highly competitive, the players are great friends and focused on the reason for the game -- Easter Seals.

Each year the game raises about $15,000.  To date it’s brought in more than $400,000 to help children and adults with speech and hearing disabilities.

"We have speech therapy on an outpatient basis and hearing services for children and adults in Cambria and Somerset counties.  The money we get from the turkey bowl helps us to be able to continue those services," Easter Seals president Annette Shearman said.

Through snow drifts, sometimes rivaling those of the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field, participants play whistle to whistle.  While they try to bring home a Thanksgiving victory, they know they've already scored big with those who didn't even suit up to play.

"It doesn't matter who wins or loses, we come we have fun, we come together on thanksgiving, we have our families, and it's great," Dovey said.

The Bears came out on top, 23-13.
